“Don’t Sleep On This” is a segment produced in the lead up to every UFC card focussing on a fighter(s) and/or matchup(s) that should not be missed (a/k/a slept on).
This week we’re talking about a few of the women in the strawweight and flyweight division. Randa ‘Quiet Storm’ Markos is looking to stop alternating wins and losses, Gillian ‘The Savage’ Robertson is looking to add to her submission pedigree with a fourth straight win and Livia Renata Souza, ‘The Brazilian Gangster’, makes her awaited UFC debut after holding the strawweight championship over in Invicta FC.
Randa Markos has alternated wins and losses since late 2013, with her most recent being a decision loss to Nina Ansaroff. History says you should bet your money on a Markos win Saturday night. Markos came into the UFC during the Ultimate Fighter’s strawweight champion crowning season, defeating strawweight contenders Tecia Torres and Felice Herrig before falling short to current strawweight champion Rose Namajunas in the semi-finals. Markos has wins over Aisling Daly, Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger, Juliana Lima and former strawweight champ Carla Esparza. Markos will face undefeated Marina Rodriguez, who is coming off a win on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series Brazil just over a month ago. Markos looks to get back on the winning track after a couple tough split decision losses and then will try put together her first winning streak in 5 years. Markos and Rodriguez will open up the portion of the main card on FS1.
American Top Team’s Gillian Robertson has quietly put together a 3-fight win streak, two of those with the UFC, all by submission. Robertson was one of the fighters on during the flyweight champion crowning season of the Ultimate Fighter, losing to Barb Honchak in the opening round. Since then, Robertson has submitted Emily Whitmire and most recently stopped the hype train of Molly ‘Meatball’ McCann, the Cage Warriors flyweight champion, with a submission this past May. I believe Robertson is a sleeper in the flyweight division; her slick ground game is really impressive, and it showed heavily in her last two recent bouts. Robertson’s opponent, Mayra Bueno Silva, is also coming off a win on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series Brazil last month and is undefeated at 4-0.
Also taking place on the Fight Pass prelims, former Invicta FC strawweight champion Livia Renata Souza will be making her UFC debut. Scheduled to make her debut in February, a hand injury forced Souza out of that bout and she’s now slated to fight this weekend against Alex Chambers. Souza went 11-1 in Invicta, her only loss coming in a title fight against current strawweight Angela Hill. With nine finishes to her résumé, Souza is looking to come in and make an impact in the strawweight division. Alex Chambers, a former Invicta fighter herself, is 1-3 in the UFC and hasn’t fought in almost a year.
