If you thought Conor McGregor was going to sail into the sunset following his UFC 229 fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov, you had better think again.
The mercurial Irish star has signed a new six fight deal with the UFC, including his new Proper Twelve whiskey brand as an in octagon sponser for every event he fights at.
Dana White confirmed news of the Irish star’s new contract to ESPN following yesterday’s press conference in New York. The deal includes McGregor’s scheduled UFC 229 bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov.
After spending a large portion of the press conference talking about Proper Twelve, McGregor was asked if the brand was sponsoring UFC 229. The former double champion was extremely animated in giving his response.
“You bet your bollocks it is,” McGregor said. “On the canvas. On the canvas. Like [Khabib’s] blood will be on the canvas.”
Details of the contract were not made available but White hinted that considering the Irishman’s broad appeal and PPV history, the deal has the potential to make McGregor the best paid fighter in the sport.
“It’s not hard to do a deal with Conor McGregor because we know what he’s worth,” White added.
It is not hard to see why the UFC were eager to lock McGregor in to a lengthy contract. Following the press conference White explained that they were currently projecting UFC 229 to deliver in excess of 2.5 million PPV buys, surpassing the promotions previous highest selling PPV event (Conor vs Nate Diaz 2) by almost 900,000 buys.
