Could we see Jones Vs. Gus 2 before the year is over? According to ESPN, the UFC is looking to book Jon Jones’ return on December 29th against his toughest challenger to date, Alexander Gustafsson.
Jones was recently handed out a 30-month suspension from USADA stemming back from a failed drug test on August 22nd, 2017. There were reports the suspension was reduced due to Jones ‘snitching’ on other users, but his manager Malki Kawa denies that, saying information was turned in to USADA about Jones himself. It has sparked a lot of opinions and outrage from the MMA community, but nonetheless, Jon Jones will be back in the octagon soon.
After rumblings about Jones saving the 230 card were put to rest by UFC president Dana White, Alexander Gustafsson and Yoel Romero were linked to headline the event. Now it seems Dana wants to close out the year with a bang and run back one of the greatest championship fights of all time.
Alexander Gustafsson last fought in May 2017, knocking out Glover Teixeira at UFC Fight Night 109 in Sweden. So both fighters are coming off year-and-a-half layoffs, and surprisingly Jones has fought more recently than Gus!
This is a rematch both fighters say they’ve wanted, whether or not an interim belt or the actual belt will be on the line is yet to be seen. UFC 232 is shaping up to be an exciting card, with the Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes superfight already announced, this addition will be a great way to finish up the year before the UFC starts its new relationship with ESPN.
