Opinion: What Next For The Defeated From UFC Calgary

With a card that could of easily fit under the Main Event at a PPV, UFC Calgary was always going to be an entertaining night of fights and it certainly lived up to the expectations of many. Opinion: Can Joanna avoid her third straight UFC loss?

Former UFC Women’s Strawweight queen Joanna Jędrzejczyk looks to recover from two consecutive losses to Rose Namajunas, as she takes on fellow top contender Tecia ‘Tiny Tornado’ Torres in the UFC’s huge return to Calgary.

Joanna, lost her title and undefeated record in dramatic fashion back at UFC 217, falling victim to a picture perfect ‘Thug’ Rose left hook, before tapping to strikes, forcing referee Big John McCarthy to bring a halt to the bout early in the first. Attempting to avenge her sole career upset, this time a cool, calm and composed Joanna went the distance with Robert Whittman trained Namajunas, losing a close decision to the youngster. A brash Joanna, has been a constant throughout her gold ridden career, but her dismantling, smothering Muay Thai style afforded to previous opponents, Claúdia Gadelha, Jéssica Andrade, Carla Esparza, Jessica Penne and compatriot Karolina Kowalkiewicz was a far cry from her initial performance against Milwaukee’s Namajunas.

Having her equally impressive win streak snapped at the hands of the rejuvenated Jéssica Andrade, Triple Threat Gym product Tecia Torres was arguably one more victory away from a deserved title tilt. Amassing three straight victories over Bec Rawlings, the experienced Juliana Lima and the well traversed Michelle Waterson, an aggressive, pressure pushing Andrade proved too much for Torres at this stage in her career. Torres, notably holds a hugely impressive victory over current 115lbs champion Rose Namajunas and has also overcome former Invicta FC champ Angela Hill and recent upstart Felice Herrig.

Jedrzejczyk vs Torres scheduled for UFC on Fox 30

UFC on Fox 30 in Canada has gained another top fight now that former strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Tecia Torres have agreed to meet toe to toe in MMA’s greatest proving ground. It has not yet been confirmed, but it is believed this fight will take the main event spot and Jose Aldo vs Jeremy Stephens will occupy the co-main event of the evening. However, a fight between Eddie Alverez and Dustin Poirier could be booked which would knock each fight down a position on the card.

Jedrzejczyk is excited to return to the octagon after losing a close decision to the now strawweight champion Rose Namajunas, and although the former Polish title holder had expressed her desire to move up a weight class, Dana White has confirmed that this fight will take place at 115lbs.

Tecia Torres will also be looking to return to winning ways after losing her previous fight to Jessica Andrade back in February. “The Tiny Tornado” was enjoying a three-fight win streak before losing to the Brazilian, and would very much like to continue the momentum with a win over arguably one of MMA’s most dominant former champions on her journey to the top of the UFC’s strawweight division.

It will be a fantastic fight for fans, with highly skilled stand-up fighting, as I very much doubt this fight will hit the canvass. Who will triumph on the night? will the tiny tornado cause an upset? or will the boogey woman return to winning ways?
