Former unified light-welterweight boxing world champion, Amir Khan has visited the KHK MMA gym in Bahrain.
MMAMotion can exclusively reveal that the UK born boxing star was visiting Bahrain to discuss an upcoming project involving MMA and boxing. With the details yet to be fully revealed, it is speculated that Khan could either be looking at producing his own combat sports promotion, or competing in an MMA bout himself. The latter has been hinted at previously after a fight with Manny Pacquio fell through in 2017. Khan proceeded to take shots at Conor McGregor, who was at the time building his fight with Floyd Mayweather. Speaking to ESNEWS last year, Khan said:
“I always said I’d give it a go, I’m a fighter who likes to fight and try different things. I don’t know if I’d be any good at it but I’d give it my all.”
“He [McGregor] wouldn’t know – I’d just hit him – bam-bam-bam-bam, but if he grabbed me I’m done, I’d have to work on that.
“Nate [Diaz] choked him out and Nate said to me ‘he’s not the best when you get him on the floor’, so he’s normally a stand up fighter.
“In boxing I think I beat him quite easily in boxing but in MMA I think it might be tough but you just don’t know.
“Conor’s a fighter who’s put the UFC on the map, he knows how to market himself.
“This is what fighting is all about, it’s all about promoting yourself, sometimes being that bad guy and making yourself a big name.”
Khan’s boxing credentials speak for itself. He is a unified light-welterweight world champion, having held the WBA (later Super) title from 2009 to 2012, and the IBF title in 2011.
At a regional level, he held the Commonwealth lightweight title from 2007 to 2008. He also held the WBC Silver welterweight title from 2014 to 2016, and once challenged for a middleweight world title in 2016.
During the visit to Bahrain, Amir Khan interacted with Mohammed Shahid, President of Brave Combat Federation and talked with some of the fighters present at the training camp.
MMAMotion sources confirm Khan has details of a “project”, and it will be revealed at some in June.
