Report: Upset Valentina Shevchenko “not surprised” by Nicco Montaño’s withdrawal, believes this “was her plan from the beginning”

Following the dramatic news that UFC flyweight champion Nicco Montaño () had been transported to a local hospital and wouldn’t be defending her title at UFC 228, her opponent, Valentina Shevchenko (15-3-0) has taken to social media to express her total lack of surprise.

As recently as yesterday’s UFC 228 media day, Shevchenko made it clear that she wasn’t counting on fighting Montaño until the cage door closed and she was stood opposite her.

Unfortunately for the challenger, her prediction came to fruition this afternoon as the fight fell through due to Montaño dealing with apparent kidney function issues.

This isn’t the first time Shevchenko has been jilted at the scales. A little over a year ago a planned bantamweight title fight against Amanda Nunes fell through at the eleventh hour following the champion being admitted to hospital with a serious sinus infection.

Clearly upset at the collapse of yet another title shot at short notice, “The Bullet” took to instagram to vent her frustrations, questioning the character of the champion and going as far as to say that she doesn’t believe that there were health issues and that Montaño had planned to drop out at the last minute all along.

“I am not surprised about this situation with Nicco.
And I told it before, she can pull out from the fight at anytime. She was trying to avoid this fight several times already. It is my 3rd preparation for this fight.
Looks like It was her plan from the beginning, to show up for the fight week , to build up her name, speak confident and secure, and then escape from the fight in the last minutes.
She was speaking about Fighting spirit and character….
What kind of fighting spirit she is talking about?
I don’t believe in a version about health issues, she was looking totally fine in open work out and media day.
Her actions are totally unprofessional!
First of all I am very sorry for all my fans who came to support me! I am very upset about all this happening. I was preparing for this fight hard and serious. My plan was to leave Dallas with the belt.
I will keep moving forward.
And will seize the next opportunity to take what is mine.
Thank you everyone of my dear friends for your support!”

This is the second time in as many fights that the UFC have had issues executing a flyweight title fight due to apparent weight cutting complications. Prior to the inaugural flyweight championship fight which saw Montaño win the title, her scheduled opponent Siraja Eubanks was pulled from the card days before the fight, again as a result of kidney function issues relating to her weight cut.

With the bout cancelled and Shevchenko left waiting for her opportunity to grasp the 125lb strap, it seems she will at least be compensated for her efforts.
