It has been a tough four years for former bantamweight champion Renan Barao. Since he was convincingly beaten by T.J. Dillashaw back in 2014 to lose his gold, he has lost four out of his six contests. Back in front of his native Brazilian crowd in this week’s UFC Sao Paulo event, the American Top Team fighter is looking to snap a two-fight skid against Andre Ewell.
However, the weekend has not got off to a good start as he stepped on the scale Friday morning rather sheepishly, and weighed in at 141.6 pounds, which is five pounds over the bantamweight limit.
Lucky for Barao, the fight will still go ahead after Ewell accepted the weight difference but Barao will be fined 30 per cent of his show purse, and all the money will go to Ewell.
Ewell makes his Octagon debut Saturday night after scoring four straight victories, all by stoppages, in the regional circuits.
UFC Sao Paulo takes place at the Ibirapuera Gymnasium and features Thiago Santos vs. Eryk Anders in the main event.
