Tony Ferguson answered questions in a media scrum on Tuesday at the UFC Performance Institue, including questions regarding potential UFC 229 matches between Connor Mcgrergor and Khabib Nurmagomedov, as well as his own match up against Anthony Pettis.
At 25:13, he is asked if the UFC approached him to be an alternate for the Main Event.
The UFC have not officially confirmed Ferguson as the alternate for the main event although it does seem that he would be the logical choice should anything prevent either McGregor or Nurmagomedov from making it to the octagon on Saturday night.
That said, should Ferguson need to step in it would produce an exciting potential match up in either direction. In the event that McGregor cannot make it to fight night, it will be the fifth time that Ferguson and Khabib will have been matched against each other and potentially the first time they actually fight.
However, if the Eagle cannot make the walk to the octagon for any reason, the Notorious will have a shot against El Cucuy. Ferguson’s extensive history egging on the Irishman when McGregor was champ, telling him to come back to the UFC to defend against him, or to vacate the title completely, captured colorfully in his #defendorvacate campaign.
With so much happening in just 4 days away, this turn of events adds to already roaring flame of commotion that exists in the lightweight division.
